Should you remodel your new home before or after you move in

People painting a new home.

You have found your new home, sealed the deal, and now you are ready to pack your bags and move in. There is just one more thing you need to do – give your new home a personal touch. However, before you do, you will have to choose: will you remodel your new home before or after you move in. Both choices have their cons and pros, so you must be familiar with specific details to make the best decision possible.

High priority projects

Before you decide, ask yourself one question: Is there anything you need to do to live uninhibited? If the answer is yes, don’t delay. Pull up your sleeves and get it done before you move in and settle down. This way, you will avoid the rush of having contactors and other strangers moving around your furnished house, making a mess. Not to mention that your home will look more like a construction site than a place to live. It will only add to the stress you already have to endure because of all of the changes. Doing this before the move will also reduce the possibility of damage to your furniture or appliances.

If you leave big projects for after the move, you will feel like you’re living on a construction site.

Redoing electricity and plumbing

If your electrical and plumbing systems are anything short of flawless, you are in for a great deal of stress. These two are the foundation of a modern, decent, and healthy life. Living without electricity and running water is unimaginable and borderline impossible. Therefore, make sure you do a thorough inspection of these systems way before you move.

Making sure your home is safe

Safety systems should be on top of your priority list. Same as electricity and plumbing, this cannot be neglected, no matter the circumstances. Fire alarms must be perfect. You can easily change batteries on your own, but be sure to hire professionals to do a thorough checkup. You need to be sure that smoke detectors and sprinklers are working correctly. It will give you peace of mind, and in the worst-case scenario, it can save your house and your life. Also, if you have a child, try to make your home as kid-friendly as possible to avoid any injuries.

Good insulation will make your home more comfortable

If your new house is located in a place where all four seasons take a turn, insulation must be taken care of, especially if you are moving during wintertime. You will have a lot of things to worry about while settling and unpacking. There’s no need to add extreme temperatures to the list of worries. Therefore, make sure all your windows, walls, and roof are properly insulated. It will not only make your home more comfortable. Quality insulation will also save you a ton of money on heating and air conditioning.

The bathroom is essential and should be among the first things to remodel

Renovating a bathroom can be a messy job, and a lengthy one, at that. Not to mention that you won’t be able to use it during this time. We all know how relaxing a long shower can be after a long day, so make sure that this task is taken care of before you move in.

Refreshing the paint

Painting the walls might not be high on your list of priorities when you decide to remodel your new home. However, it is way simpler to repaint the house before your furniture, carpets, and appliances arrive. It will make cleaning afterward much more manageable, and, most importantly, you’re not risking paint spots on your refrigerator or your new carpet.

What to do when priority renovations can’t be done before the move?

Sometimes, all the big projects, such as electrical wiring or plumbing, have to be done after moving. In this case, you should decide whether you’ll be staying in the house during this time or live somewhere else. Make sure to plan this before you start to remodel your new home.

Even if living in another place isn’t an option, you will still need a safe space to rest and recharge. Prepare a room or two where you will be spending time during the renovation. If you are renovating the kitchen, find some good take out places so you don’t have to worry about preparing food.

Low Priority Projects

When you’ve taken care of all the big things, you can finally take a breather. From this point on, it only becomes more straightforward.

Replacing the appliances

You can replace old appliances with new ones after you move in. If the old ones are still in working condition, you can bump this item even lower on the list of priorities.

Furniture can be both high and low priority

Another thing that can wait for after the move is replacing the furniture. Unless it’s too old or broken, you won’t have to replace it in a rush. After your space is renovated, you’ll want to decorate and make it your own. Create a cozy atmosphere by choosing the right pieces of furniture for your new home, one that will fit your needs. After the stress and all the hard work to make your house safe, you will need a corner just for yourself, so you could relax and rest.

After the significant work is done, you can focus on giving your new home a unique touch.

However, keep in mind that few things are essential for successfully operating daily. The beds you sleep in have to be comfortable and cozy. There should be enough space in the living room and kitchen for all family members. Also, children’s rooms have to be ready before the move so that they have a safe space away from the hassle.

Dustproof your house

With renovations comes messiness. Protect your appliances and new furniture from dust and debris with a protective tarp. Remove curtains and all fragile or expensive items.

The renovation will be easier if you prepare properly

Dealing with the renovation can be a challenge. Whether you decide to remodel your new home before or after you move in, be sure to have all your cards on the table. Make a plan, stick to it, but be prepared that sometimes things won’t go as planned. Before you know it, you will enjoy your brand new house.
